Self-Serving Secrecy: When Congress Places Itself Above the Law

10

In an era where the integrity of American democracy is constantly under scrutiny, a recent decision by the U.S. Congress has sparked significant concern among conservatives and defenders of privacy rights alike. In what appears to be a stark display of legislative hypocrisy, lawmakers have reportedly carved out an exemption for themselves from the stringent surveillance oversight typically enforced under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

FISA, established to oversee and regulate the manner in which domestic surveillance is conducted for national security purposes, has been a topic of heated debate and contention. Its purpose, while rooted in protecting national interests, has raised valid concerns regarding privacy infringements and the potential for governmental overreach. The recent maneuvers by Congress, however, elevate these concerns to new heights, showcasing a troubling departure from foundational principles of accountability and equality before the law.

At the heart of this decision lies a fundamental question: Why should members of Congress be granted protections unfathomable to the average American citizen? This move not only undermines public trust in governmental institutions but also perpetuates a dangerous precedent where lawmakers are seen as operating above the laws they create and enforce.

The conservative viewpoint has long championed the sanctity of individual liberties and the necessity of limited government. The actions of Congress, in this case, starkly contradict these core values, suggesting a shift towards convenience and self-preservation at the expense of civil liberties. Such a dichotomy between what is preached and what is practiced erodes the fabric of our democratic ideals, stoking rightful outrage and skepticism amongst the populace.

Moreover, this development poses grave implications for the future of surveillance oversight in the United States. By exempting themselves, lawmakers effectively remove a layer of accountability, potentially opening the door for more invasive surveillance tactics under the guise of national security. This not only jeopardizes the privacy of U.S. citizens but also calls into question the integrity and impartiality of those in power.

The rationale provided for this exemption, if any, is likely to be cloaked in national security concerns. However, conservatives argue that true security cannot come at the cost of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution. The strength of a nation lies not in the unchecked power of its government, but in its unwavering commitment to liberty and justice for all.

It is imperative, now more than ever, for the voices of reason and conservatism to unite in opposition to this egregious overstep. The principles of transparency, accountability, and equal justice must be defended vigorously, without succumbing to the temptations of power and privilege. Congress must remember that it serves the people, and in doing so, must not exempt itself from the standards it sets for the nation.

In conclusion, this self-serving carve-out by Congress is a clarion call for conservatives and all who value individual liberties. It is a reminder that vigilance in the face of governmental overreach is essential, and that the battle for privacy, transparency, and accountability is ongoing. Only through consistent and principled opposition can we hope to preserve the freedoms that define our great nation.

  1. Politics, or prostitution,a choice made by too many shallow ego freaks that are cursed with a messiah complex and a very low IQ. We now only have the “Uniparty” here, today,in the U.S.A. “Voters,be damned”,the new slogan for the House, and Senate, would be royal class members, one, and all!

  2. It is outrageous that congress exempts, themselves and gives unfettered freedom to avoid accountability. In doing so they raise questions as to how trustworthy they are in guarding and protecting our civil rights and liberties and raises the question as to what they fear could be unearthed about their lives. Our country is on a slippery, slope towards communism and a loss of our freedoms. The perpetrators of the direction are the members of congress whose sole concern is staying in office, not the protections enveloped in our constituion.

  3. Republicans ARE NO DIFFERENT than Democrats. Go to DC to serve themselves so republicans suck too.
If anyone runs against Johnson the next time he is up for reelection, I will vote for the one who runs against his sorry ass.

  4. Congress is the only Americans. The rest of us are peons and deserve no protections. It has been that way for years. There is as much concern for the average American, in congress, as there is in the white house. We all know how much the white house cares about Americans. Congress has such a high opinion of themselves that they have no concernes left for Americans. It will be interesting to see how they react when they find out all the new people don’t pay taxes or support any government. They let them in and now they will have to deal with not having any money or support from all of them plus they will expect to be continually supported in the lifestyle they have been promised. They have become acustomed to a better lifestyle and will demand that continue.

  5. Most thinking citizens of this country are already apprehensive about the overreach of government and the alphabet soup of “intelligence” that walk the halls of both the Congress and the courts. Many will not protest because we do not have deep pockets to defend our freedom of speech. Many have already been retaliated against and convicted of unacceptable speech as identified by judges and the leftists. George Orwell’s novel “1984” seems prophetic in today’s environment. He wrote about the dangers of negative things that could happen if the government were allowed to exercise total control over us. Groups of people will use propaganda to usurp power, to exploit the vulnerable and to control the masses. We live in scary, dangerous times for the common man and this is just another layer of destruction to our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Our founding fathers must be rolling in their graves.

  6. I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it: our government representatives, supposedly elected by the people, no longer work for the people but themselves, ensuring that the government has the people under their collective thumb, ensuring their political survival. The Constitutional Republic was weakened by the tyranny that the two-party system has become, and it is now in jeopardy of becoming an authoritarian, socialist form of government. Our votes are no longer relevant regarding who controls the power, so we have lost any defense of the controls we once held. The Justice Department in the United States is no longer protecting the people; instead, it is looking for ways to punish us for not accepting this new form of authority. FISA is just one of the many tools they hope to keep using to force that control down our conservative throats. Topping it all off, the elitists of the world aren’t even that worried about control; they are working to thin the population down to a size that would ensure its complete manipulation. They started with COVID-19. It will not stop with that little virus; it was just a test of our resilience to their thinking; ask a guy named Bill.

  7. I think any law passed by Congress should be the law of the land, with no exceptions, not for the police, the Government, firefighters, boy scouts or anybody else. Maybe then Congress would think, before passing laws. No laws just to make you feel good. Also when
a law is passed it should be enforced, not dropped because of who you are, or enforced
only because of who you are. Equal justice across the board period.

  8. Democrats and Republicans who voted for this are traitors. They are going for complete control over the American people. Time to chase these Unamerican losers out of America. You don’t deserve to be a American or live in America.
