Nearly half of older Americans now expect to work until they die — a stunning verdict on decades of bad policy, broken promises, and rising costs hitting seniors who played by the rules.
Story Snapshot
- About 42% of adults 60+ say they will never fully retire, many out of financial need[5].
- Roughly half of households near retirement have little or no savings, making stopping work impossible[3].
- Older Americans are squeezed by lost pensions, higher prices, and pressure on Social Security[8].
- Elites and past big-government policies pushed “work longer” while seniors face real insecurity[4].
Older Americans Say Retirement May Never Come
ZipRecruiter’s 2026 Reality Report finds that over **42% of adults age 60 and older** say they will never fully stop working, with many stressing this is *not* their choice but a financial need[5]. This is not just a few people staying busy. It is a major share of seniors who simply cannot afford traditional retirement. At the same time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a record **11.6 million Americans 65 and older** are in the labor force, a jump of about 132% since 2004[5].
Other studies show the same pattern. A national survey reported that **51% of Americans at standard retirement age plan to work indefinitely**, often part-time[2]. Nearly half of those working past retirement say they do it mainly because of **financial necessity**, not just for enjoyment[2]. When older workers themselves say they are working “indefinitely” and “out of necessity,” it points to an economy that has failed to deliver secure retirement for a huge share of citizens who did their part for decades.
Savings Shortfalls and Broken Retirement Promises
Government Accountability Office data reviewed by researchers show that **about half of households ages 55–64 have less than $25,000 in retirement savings**, and over **40% have no savings at all**[3]. For households 55 and older, the median balance was about $109,000, which would provide only a few hundred dollars a month in retirement[3]. That is nowhere near enough to cover housing, food, medical bills, and taxes in today’s economy. It is no surprise that many older Americans see working until death as likely.
This shortfall did not happen by accident. Past policy pushed workers out of traditional pensions and into personal 401(k)-style accounts, shifting risk from employers and government to the individual[7]. Many workers never had steady access to these plans, or they could not contribute enough while wages stayed flat and prices rose[7]. A major study of senior households found that **more than half lack the resources to meet basic projected expenses**, and many face heavy burdens from housing and insurance costs[20]. Put simply, seniors have “too little income and costs that are too high,” forcing many to stay in the workforce[20].
Rising Costs, Social Security Rules, and Elite Narratives
Older Americans also face complex Social Security rules that can penalize work. Experts note that people under full retirement age who earn above a set limit can have benefits withheld, and many also get taxed on those benefits[5]. Seniors trying to patch holes in their budgets by working more can find themselves caught between the need for income and fear of losing promised benefits. Meanwhile, think-tank proposals often call for raising the “normal retirement age,” effectively telling workers to stay on the job longer to protect program finances[18].
Critics point out that America’s wealthiest often back policies that make it harder for seniors to cover health and living costs, while selling the story that “work longer” is good for them[4]. One analysis warns that the feel-good pitch about working into old age hides the reality for many lower-income seniors stuck in “painful, boring, insecure jobs” with real health risks[4]. For older Americans who spent decades paying taxes and following the rules, being told their reward is to “just keep working” feels like an insult, not a solution, especially when elites prosper under the same system.
Not Everyone Is Forced — But Insecurity Is Widespread
Some seniors do choose to work or volunteer for purpose and social connection. Research shows older adults who volunteer regularly often report better mental and physical health[9]. Other reports highlight retirees who take part-time roles to stay active or share their skills, and many find real joy in that work[13]. These stories matter, and they show that work in later years can be positive when it is truly optional and supported.
But choice is the key word. When **42% of people 60 and older** say they expect to work until they die[5], and when **more than half of senior households lack enough money for basic expenses**[20], extended work is not simply a lifestyle trend. It is a sign that the promise of a dignified retirement is breaking down for millions. For conservatives who value personal responsibility, this picture should spark anger not at seniors, but at decades of policies that punished savers, weakened pensions, let inflation eat away nest eggs, and treated Social Security and Medicare as tools for budget games instead of solemn commitments.
