‘Ferocious’ New Special Counsel in DOJ Probes Means ‘Trump in Trouble’

The appointment of veteran federal prosecutor Jack Smith as special counsel in the two US Department of Justice investigations into Donald Trump most probably means the former US President is “in trouble,” according to a report.

Democrat President Joe “Multiple Crises” Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, appointed last week Jack Smith to oversee the DOJ’s investigations: whether Trump tried to prevent the lawful transfer of power following the 2020 election, including by stopping the January 6, 2021 vote certification; and whether the ex-president illegally kept classified government documents in his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, which was raided by the FBI on August 8 of this year.

According to an Axios report, Trump can expect Smith to come after him hard, and an alleged media campaign by conservatives to “smear” the new special counsel wouldn’t help him.

The report also dwells on any similarities between special counsel Jack Smith and former special counsel Robert Mueller in the “Trump – Russia” investigation, concluding that there are few parallels between the two if any.

The article points out that Jack Smith is a “widely respected veteran federal prosecutor” who got tapped by Garland to oversee some “of the most explosive investigations” ever involving a former US president.

Axios writes that Biden’s AG resorted to the new special counsel’s appointment to “avoid the perception” there was a “conflict of interest” since Trump remains under investigation even though on November 15, he formally announced his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.

The report emphasizes that “some Republicans” have immediately moved to accuse Jack Smith of “being a secret liberal” even though he is a “registered independent.”

It claims the GOP and conservative pundits are seeking to “defang” the new special counsel by “reviving a playbook” they used against Robert Mueller.

It notes that one of the main reasons Smith is accused of political bias is that his wife has donated to the Democratic Party.

Several GOP lawmakers, such as Texas US Sen. Ted Cruz, New York US Rep. Elise Stefanik, and Ohio US Rep. Jim Jordan, have described Smith’s appointment as “politicization.”

‘I Wouldn’t Be in That Line of Work’

According to the Axios report, “this isn’t 2017,” and conservative criticism, or, rather, “mudslinging” of Jack Smith, wouldn’t help Trump to emerge as “unscathed” as he did from Robert Mueller’s “Trump-Russia” investigation.

The report discusses how the conditions now are totally different legally and politically, including because Trump isn’t the president and has no way of influencing Jack Smith’s work as special counsel.

Besides that, the DOJ investigations into Trump wouldn’t be slowed down by his appointment because teams of agents and prosecutors have already been established and working – even though Smith is still in Europe and working remotely, as he has been serving as an international prosecutor on Kosovo crimes in the Hague, the Netherlands.

Another factor is the investigation carried out simultaneously by the January 6 committee of the US House of Representatives, which is claimed to have compiled “massive amounts of evidence” that would be transferred to the Justice Department.

The report quotes James Risen, a journalist from the leftist outlet The Intercept, who was prosecuted by Smith in a CIA leak trial.

Risen claims “Trump will be in trouble” if the special counsel comes after him with “the same unrelenting ferocity.”

In a New York Times interview in 2010, Jack Smith said he wasn’t the type of person who could get cowed because otherwise, he wouldn’t be a prosecutor.
